The Birmingham bombing was the deadliest single attack of the civil rights movement and remains one of the most notorious incidents of violence and political terrorism in U.S. The church was the scene of a Ku Klux Klan bombing that killed four black girls in 1963, and Alabama’s parole board is scheduled next week to consider the early release of Thomas Edwin Blanton Jr., the last man serving time for the slayings. Three members of the Ku Klux Klan planted a bomb at the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama on “youth day.” Youth Day was a day at the church where young church members conducted many of the activities around the church service.Īlso murdered in the bombing were Addie Mae Collins, Carole Rosamond Robertson and Cynthia Dionne Wesley.
